Ableton is my sequencer, synth and modular controller. So it's not really a matter of choosing one or the other. I sync LUNA and Ableton over the IAC bus, so I can get an arrangement down in Ableton and work right alongside LUNA tracks, eventually dumping the audio into LUNA over virtual tracks. Use the PT shortcuts in Logic, and as Kcatthedog says, you won't have to relearn a bunch of stuff if you go Luna down the line. Not sure if you plan to eventually get in to LUNA, but if so, I'd work PT and Logic, and eventually phase PT out for LUNA. It’s foundational to my Logic workflow for 6 specific reasons: Cleaning up Audio Regions. Personally, I couldn’t imagine a life without the Marquee. Started in 1997 with with PARIS/Cubase, then moved to ProTools/Cubase, then ProTools/Logic, then ProTools/Ableton, and now moving towards Luna/Ableton. From cleaning up your tracks to drawing Automation, the Marquee Tool is all about finesse and efficiency. I've never found a single DAW that excels at both audio recording in a band/talent setting and composing/arranging as an individual. It's promising as it looks like it would cover all the basesĮditing-wise here, it can use AU format files, but mostly because it's got a somethingorother similar to PT's Smart Tool.and it's free which is pretty great. Old brain.Īctually Luna may be in the future here once it stabilizes with Apple Silicon. Wish it were not the case but but every attempt with it here has failed. Logic is a non-subscription product and super powerful. It's an expense to stay "OS-current" with Pro Tools and it's proprietary AAX file format. MIDI & VI ops are 'ok', not great though with many issues in their MIDI implementation, but it works. ![]() PT is found in almost all pro rooms, even if only to be able to send audio sessions in a common file format.ĪVID makes some great products (too many probably) and while PT generally works great, it is literally years behind in important bug fixes. Many pro-level engineers are required to work in either, and some can absolutely fly in both. The PT UI came from a linear, tape-based mindset which might be why some may prefer to record, mix and edit audio with it. When it comes to recording software or DAWs (Digital Audio Workstations), there are a few big players: Pro Tools, Ableton Live, and Cubase, to name a few. Multiple MIDI sources, while being even more capable than PT in the audio realm. Consequentially Logic is considered better suited for those composing with loops, VI, and Logic began as a sequencer, now with audio. If you're trying to decide (?) which DAW to concentrate on, remember that PT began as an audio recorder-editor, now with MIDI. That, and couple of key combinations do the trick. And save hours of tedious editing with new drag-and-drop hot zones.Here it's all about the Smart Tool in PT, which other DAWs now emulate with good reason. Use the zone waveform editor to make precise edits to sample start/end and loop ranges with an option to snap to transients or zero crossings. And the reimagined mapping editor adds powerful, time-saving features that speed the creation of complex instruments - including editing commands for automatic mapping, automatic loop finding, and analyzing and splitting samples into zones. An extendable modulation section allows you to add more sources and destinations as needed.
